Jana Diesner: Analysing Semantic Networks. Lab seminar at LINIS

On May 20, 2013, Dr. Jana Diesner spoke at the Internet Studies Lab. She is known for developing new methods for analyzing semantic networks. Dr.Diesner told the audience that most of her work is focused on developing methods which allow researchers to isolate relationships from large corpora of texts written in ‘natural’ language.

By presenting such corpora as networks reflecting relationships between key concepts, the researcher can obtain structured representations of  big data sets that can’t be read manually. Combining linguistic methods for determining key concepts with methods for  network analysis of the resulting graphs  is Jana Diesner’s “research style”.

After Jana Diesner’s presentation, the seminar participants discussed the projects being implemented at the Laboratory, particularly the project on representation of ethnic groups in the Russian blogosphere (project leader: Svetlana Bodrunova ). Sergey Koltsov presented several software products developed at LINIS, including TopicMiner, software for topic modeling, which has an user-friendly interface and allows users to easily change the model’s parameters and quickly, visually evaluate modeling results. As a result of the seminar, the parties agreed on a possible joint publication.
