In scope of Stanford US-Russia Forum LINIS trainee researcher Eleonora Kirkizh has presented her research at Stanford University. The project was implemented in collaboration with three other students from Canada and the United States.
Stanford US-Russia Forum began in the autumn 2013 in Moscow. Then 20 Russian and 20 American students interested in studying the relations between Russia and the United States came to start their projects. LINIS intern Eleonora Kirkizh became a member of the group Media Research. In particular, four students from Russia, Canada and the United States were given the task to investigate media bias on any case. Students chose the conflict in Syria, the involvement of Russia and the United States in this conflict and covering it by media.
Within six months, the group explored American and Russian media for coverage of the conflict in Syria and the head of these states - the actions and decisions taken by representatives of Russia and the United States. As a result, students mabaged to determine the availability of media bias. For this they built text network graphs that visually showed bias in coverage of the conflict by selected media.
The project was presented at Stanford University on April 20, 2014 during the final part of Stanford US-Russia Forum, which was attended by all other 36 participants. Currently, researchers are working on the publication of the results in a academic journal.
